Parchment paper is paper that is treated with silicone. The silicone coating makes the paper non-stick, so food doesn’t stick when you’re cooking or baking. This is really helpful! Add to that that parchment paper is heat-resistant, which means you can use it safely in the oven without the risk that it’ll burn.
Wax paper, on the other hand, is covered with a waxy layer. This wax gives it a glossy appearance, however it also makes wax paper non-heat resisitant. Thus, you should always avoid using wax paper in the oven. If you do, the wax can drip and get everywhere. Instead, wax paper is most useful for keeping food fresh in the fridge or on the go, such as to wrap, sandwich or on-the-go snack. It protects food but not for cooking.
However, if you choose to use parchment paper for baking or cooking there are some tips to keep in mind. First of all, preheat your oven before adding parchment paper to it. Using preheat allows the paper not to burn when getting hot.
Another great tip is to line your baking sheets in the kitchen if you bake a lot of cookies (or any other treat) with parchment paper. This will prevent the cookies from sticking when you place the parchment paper onto the baking sheet. Which does make it far easier to remove the cookies from the sheet once baked! It also can make your cleanup much easier.
If you are using wax paper, this is truly important laws to make, so read the warnings on the package first. Additionally, wax paper is not heat-safe for cooking at high temperatures, as mentioned above, the wax may transfer to food. This can make a huge mess, and can also start a fire, which is super dangerous! So note that wax paper works great for preserving food, such as leftovers or sandwiches, and keeping its flavor intact.
You aren’t to use a serrated-edge knife when cutting either your parchment paper or wax paper. Tools sharper than your parent paper, which will allow you cut the paper in clean cuts without tearing or leaving ugly edges. That will mean your parchment or wax paper is the exact size of what you need!
As we discussed previously, wax paper is not for high heat cooking. When the wax gets hot, it can melt and drip into your food, which it one of the reasons they do that. Not only does this get your food dirty, but it can also be a fire hazard. Plus, wax paper is not non-stick like parchment paper. That means food can cling to it and tear it apart, causing a huge mess when you attempt to take your food off.
